Preschool & Kindergarten - Molding A Solid Foundation

Karyn Legg - Preschool DirectorPreschool   [Back to top]

The preschool program of Kingsway Christian School is designed to present preschoolers and their families with a positive introduction to the educational experience. Kingsway believes that parents are ultimately held accountable for the education of their children and it is our goal to come alongside parents and provide a safe, loving, Christian environment as a first step in preparing a strong educational foundation.

Kingsway Christian Preschool provides a balance of spiritual, academic, social and physical activities to promote well-rounded student growth. Preschoolers are introduced to letters, numbers, shapes, colors and more.

The development of social skills occurs as students are encouraged to share with others, wait their turn, raise their hand before speaking, and focus on completing a task at hand before moving on to other activities.

The KCS preschool program is an excellent way to introduce children to the academic world, yet still have plenty of time at home!

Pre-Kindergarten   [Back to top]
Age Level: 4 years old by September 1
Class Days: Monday, Wednesday & Friday
Class Times: 8:10-11:10 a.m. OR 12:10-3:10 p.m.

Our Pre Kindergarten program continues to build on the foundation established during the Pre Cubs program. Students continue to learn letters, numbers, colors, shapes and other similar concepts.

Themes and units are incorporated and presented in a way that makes learning fun and interesting. Students continue to develop socially and physically as they perform the various activities of the program. Field trips, classroom visitors and special events continue to supplement the curriculum at this level.

To better track student development and identify possible strengths and weaknesses, we use a custom designed kindergarten readiness test. With this, we inventory the skills of each child in early fall. This gives us a baseline for comparison throughout the year to help us evaluate areas of development needed during the early childhood years. This has proven to be a valuable tool.

All Pre Kindergarten children must be potty trained. No Pull-Ups are allowed.

Age Level: 5 years old by September 1
Class Days: Monday through Friday
Class Times:

  • Half Day: 8:20-11:20 a.m. OR 12:30-3:30 p.m.
  • Full Day: 8:30-3:20

Our kindergarten teachers use a strong Christian curriculum that teaches and reinforces Christian values in each aspect of the educational process. It's also very good at presenting the academic material, allowing the students to practice and apply it, then come back at a later time for additional review.

Each of our three full day kindergarten classes consists of a maximum of 20 students. The half day classes have a maximum of 18 students in each class. Our kindergarten teachers are all licensed by the State of Indiana and there are 2 paraprofessionals that are shared among the classrooms. Each room is self-contained with coat hooks, bathroom and kitchenette-type facilities so students don't need to leave the room unless it's as a group when they go to special classes or recess. We welcome and even encourage parent involvement as classroom and special event volunteers with the goal to make the everyday learning environment as productive and enjoyable as possible.

We consider Kindergarten as one of the pivotal years in the life of a KCS student. While all the basic subjects are taught, including science, social studies, art, music and handwriting, the three primary subjects of focus are Bible, reading and math. It's our philosophy that students who master these three areas will experience a far more successful and productive educational career than those who acquire only nominal skill levels.

Bible is the groundwork of everything we do at KCS and is integrated throughout the day in each subject. It is also the basis for learning social skills as well as the weekly memory verse. Memory verses are part of the weekly curriculum and are often integrated with a particular letter or theme of the week.

Math primarily consists of number recognition, number sense and addition and subtraction in a variety of ways and situations so students will better understand how it is used in everyday life, including distance, money, time, weight and more.

Phonics and 'blend ladders' are a few of the techniques used for teaching reading that usually advance most students to reading simple short-vowel books by Thanksgiving or Christmas break and books by the end of the school year.

Kindergarten students also have library, PE and computer classes as well as 2 field trips. During library time students learn various sections of the library as well as enjoying a time when the librarian reads to them in an effort to pique their interest in books and reading. During computer class, students learn basic computer skills and often play various educational games to reinforce previous lessons. Field trips are used as another excellent way to broaden a student’s knowledge about the world around them.

All in all, Kindergarten is a fast-paced, eventful time designed to make learning fun and enjoyable and to lay the groundwork for a fruitful education and future.

Distinguishing A Successful KCS Student

It takes years to educate a child and prepare them with the quality skills they’ll need for a fruitful and meaningful life, yet, unless these skills are carefully organized, they can easily be confusing. In conjunction with the standards for the State of Indiana, KCS has outlined the following guide to give parents a systematic roadmap for molding a successful and productive education. Using these guides have shown that students who experience a complete KCS education are very well prepared to experience a successful high school and college career wherever they go.

Things I should know when I leave kindergarten:
  • Know that God loves me & made each child special

  • Recognize and give sound for each letter

  • Recognize sight words introduced

  • Read short stories and comprehend what is read

  • Recognize numbers 0-100

  • Compute simple addition through sums of 10

  • Tell time to hour/half hour
